Q&A with Coach Trevor 'Turkish" Ruwitch
MSP is very excited to have our first ever coach for the 2017 season! Mr. Trevor “Turkish” Ruwitch will be leading our team to fame. Trevor has been coaching the girls high school team at Great River Montessori for four years, two with JV and two with Varsity. He assisted with the Edina girls varsity team for one year and has co-coached Minnesota’s YCC (Youth Club Championships) mixed team for four years as well. Trevor has a very strong coaching record with these teams and hopes to carry this success over to MSP.
To get to know our new coach a little better, we hosted a Q&A with him. Here’s what we found out:
Question: (I hadn’t asked one yet)
Answer: The answer is, my perfect morning is a nice relaxing stroll around Calhoun with Gwen (his dog) followed by coffee and mimosas.
Question: What has been your greatest accomplishment related to ultimate frisbee?
Answer: Coaching GRS to their back to back state championship
Question: What color looks best on you?
Answer: I want to say Blue, but I’m fairly certain I’m a horrible judge about what looks good on me….. I mean I own like 4 pairs of Zubaz (not a color Turkish)
Question: What do you think is the hardest position in frisbee? (breakside handler, first cutter in the vert stack, etc.)
Answer: Coach…. but actually the hardest position is the 27th person on the roster. They have to stay extremely motivated and positive to help their teammates without seeing the field as often as they would like, if at all.
Question: Who is your favorite power ranger?
Answer: Obvi The Pink Ranger
Question: What is your favorite thing about yourself?
Answer: I honestly really like my sense of humor
Question: Who is your favorite cartoon character?
Answer: Either Fry from Futurama or Archer from Archer
Question: What is your favorite thing about MSP?
Answer: MSP gave me my first break in ultimate when I had no clue what I was doing. It’s a team that encourages everyone. Some of my best friends play/have played for this team. I’m glad to be able to help out any way I can.

Captain J’s Pre-Series Prep
After nearly 10 years of playing Ultimate, you might think I’ve got my pre-tourney week down to a science. But the series only comes around once a year and I want to do everything right this time. So this year, I’m practicing my prep:
The week before sectionals I’m doing exactly the same things as I plan to do the week before regionals. I’ll know what worked and what didn’t, and adjust accordingly.
It’s all about the little things… Every day I plan to:

Hemingway - 08/03/2017
This post is from our captain, Jasper WB.
“It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes, you are ready.”
-- The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway
Old Man and fishman Santiago is talking to himself about… well, fishing. I love fishing, and the quote definitely applies! But of course you don’t need to be an English PhD to realize that Hemingway is talking about more than fishing for marlins in the Gulf Stream. This quote has been making me think about my approach to life for months now, and the story below is just one example of how it applies to Ultimate.
***
You’re playing defense. Your mark goes deep and you follow. You take position! You go up first! You hit the disc with outstretched fingertips, knocking it off its course! Tangled with your mark, you topple down. You’re amped after your amazing defensive play.
But as you get up, the other team is cheering! What?! There’s no way your mark caught the disc! Then you see another offender holding it. They trailed the play and your defensive effort just happened to MAC the frisbee right to them.
It’s easy to chalk this up luck. As a defender, there really is little more you could have done. But as an offensive unit, the other team has put lots of work into creating the opportunity for that “garbage clean up”.
The clean up player started following the play immediately when the huck went up. Weeks before, the offense practiced following every huck with modified rules in their scrimmage. Even before that, a captain chose this player because of a similar play they made at tryouts.
It was luck that you MACed the disc to another offender, but having another offender in the area is due to careful preparation. Luck came, and your opponents were ready.

Captains have been working hard to get the team ready for the season:
- We brought on the help of Coach Turkish Ruwitch to keep the team on task, develop strategy, and give us a better shot at nabbin’ his super-cute puppy.
- We drew up a tentative competition and practice schedule, see the Calendar page.
- We joined other MSP athletes in some preseason agility workouts in the unseasonable weather.

MSP 2017 Equity Statement
This summer, MSP is excited to announce that we will be partnering with GUPI to help promote gender equity in the Minnesota ultimate community. - Show equity off the field by avoiding inappropriate/sexist language and behavior, encouraging player accountability in response to disrespectful language/sexism and behavior, having a clear and realistic protocol for responding to instances of sexism, and actively creating opportunities for the team to discuss issues of allyship/equity/privilege to create an environment that is progressive and reflective
- Show equity on the field by committing to avoiding dangerous plays and creating specific ways that MSP will highlight the women on the field
- Work to promote girl’s ultimate in Minnesota by providing time, resources, coaching clinics, and being there to cheer on high school women during their games.
Thor's Top 5 From Select Flight Invite
08/24/2016
- Sunday during our last bye after thoroughly embarrassing a good weather loving west coast team, we proceeded to entertain them with 4-5 line dances in a row in the parking lot while waiting for our turn to finish out the tourney. This included the best wobble I have ever done.
- Francis claimed that everyone thinks about a special talent they have that they would pull out in case of a kidnapping in order to either impress their kidnappers and convince them to let them go or be useful in the escape process. Her talent...spreading her toes really wide. Other talents revealed include; Thor can swallow many pills at once, Kianna can do a "really far" back bend as demonstrated in the airport, Julie Bender can blow spit bubbles, Roske was in a band...
- Eating breakfast with Union from Canada. First thing the girl says to me.."Your women's soccer team really crapped the bed at the olympics." Hip Hip Hooray for international love.
- Exiting the cars after our first rain delay while playing Mesteno. We pulled out the speaker, got rowdy and showed that MSP wasn't nothing to F with. I have never seen such a turn around in effort. 6-0 run in 15 minutes of play time...priceless.
- Seeing 2 callahans in 1 tournament.... so awesome. Great plays all day.
I love this team. They motivate me. They pick me up when I need it. I give them my all.
Bo's Top 5 From MUDI

2- Beating the Millers on universe point
3 - Multiple hammer/break side scores to Joe from Alex
4 - Turned it up against Mad Udderburn and kept taking it to them
